I just tried my two Nikkor lenses again (a 50/1.4 and an 85/1.4).  My
mistake was viewing through the front.  When viewing through the rear of
the lens, I get a considerablty wider view.  But in the case of the 85
which covers more than a 35mm frame, the magnification is too low.   And it
is still clumsy to use full time as a proper loupe.
