Well, the answer is simple. Sometime either just before or just after the Leitz family sold the company, the governmental power that be decided to combine the towns of Wetzlar and Giessen into one and call it Lahnstadt, after the Lahn River.. The Leica folds wanting to preserve the Wetzlar name, changed the name of the company to Leica Wetzlar. Since Wetzlar and Giessen still exist, I guess the town name change was defeated.
