Diffusion in the printing process.
Place a piece of 'black stocking' (favourite option) below the lens during 
printing, this spreads the light (dark bits of the picture) into the 
shadows, which in turn are the highlights of the picture.

My Friday missive is not about tilley hats ( I have on but my kids forbid

to don same in their presence) or about my PAW which is now at T minus 7
weeks and counting.  No it's about B and W photos that seem to have the
darkest black areas "bleed" into the ligther areas.  Some of michael 
Kenna's
work comes to mind.  The photos have an ethereal look to them.  OK
professional photographers out there - how do they do that.
