Place a piece of 'black stocking' (favourite option) below the lens during printing, this spreads the light (dark bits of the picture) into the shadows, which in turn are the highlights of the picture. No it's about B and W photos that seem to have the darkest black areas "bleed" into the ligther areas. Some of michael Kenna's work comes to mind. The photos have an ethereal look to them.
