And it has nothing to do with being uncultured...it is sort of a cult thing...I discovered them in '92 when a friend at Newsday showed me a pair of what he described as "the world's most comfortable - and ugliest - shoes.." and they are close to being both...although there are now some better looking Mephistos....Always looking for comfortable shoes for my uncomfortable feet, I bought a pair of suade Mephistos that looked like a cross between desert boots and PF flyers, and wore them for my month in East Africa...after my first foray into and out of Somalia, I dumped them into the sink in my hotel room and washed the inch of dust and camel dung off them...let them dry over night, and then put them back on...great shoes....
