The 1270 (and presumably 1290) can't use the Piezography system as they

fewer paper handling problems than the 3000. The 3000 is otherwise the only
Piezography capable printer in this range.

If anybody wants to save their money and wait, Jon Cone is coming out with
an Epson 7000 dedicated to Piezography - price in the $3-4,000 range. He
promises it is in the final stages of development. This should be a truly
professional black and white printer.
