Hi Bill,

I don't know for sure but considering the $$$ involved I think some
restoration is going on.

At one time Leica would replace the top plate, reengraving the old
serial number. I understand all the parts and engraving gear got sold
some time back. Maybe Sal will know some details. 

Also, there may be some comments in the archives on this.
