Jem,

Remember that your bid can trigger a higher bid that's already been entered.
For instance, let's say that opening bid is $5.00 with .50 increments.
Another bidder bids $10.25, but his bid is entered at the minimum, or $5.50.
Every time you place a bid above the entered bid but below $10.25, a new bid
is automatically entered from the other bidder and he remains the high
bidder. If you bid $9.00, his bid of $9.50 is entered. If you bid $10.00 at
the last second, he still wins because his bid was $10.25. If you bid
$10.25, he still wins because earlier bids take precedence. The only way you
can win is to bid higher than $10.25.
