One consideration in checking stuff on airliners is the limitation on
recovery from the airline in case of loss. Last time I looked it was about
$1,200 per bag.

Of course if the equipment is covered by the traveler's own insurance, and
if he or she has no concerns about turning in claims (possible increase in
premiums or cancellation), then airline limitations are a non-issue.
