That is exactly the problem. I had a Nikon D1 for a while and it is a great
camera for certain types of light. For any low light and/or high ISO (i.e. >
200) the software can't interpret the captured bits the same way as ancient
technology the likes of Tri-X. Same problem for exposures > 1 sec. This is
the real issue and IMHO no one has really solved it yet. The new Canon D30
does slightly better in these situations and the high end Kodak cameras
(DCSnnn) are probably some of the best. The bottom line is that currently
even a $30K Kodak DCS body can't match an M6/Noct/TMAX3200 in low light.

Kodak noted in an interview with the developer of the CCD chip that they are
not afraid to sell the chip to others as the true knowledge is not the chip,
but the software for image manipulation and the algorithms for capturing and
compressing and correcting the raw ccd sensor output.
