You only have to meter the reference object once and keep shooting, as
long as the light does not change. With AEL you have to meter over and
over again before each shot.

See the point? All you need in this situation is a manual setting and
grey cells. AE not needed here. It just gets in the way.

Photographic eperience will guide you.

A simple but accurate meter, some experience (which you will never get
with fully automated cameras), and a brain.
