The idea of a sliding lens shade is, in an of itself, not a bad one. The problem is that the lens shade will, without any type of locking mechanism, typically slide back into the lens at the most inopportune moment. It seems to me that it would be a relatively simple matter of adding a bayonet-lock to the collapsible lens shades. That way, you'd extend them fully, twist a quarter of a turn and lock it, and it would stay put. If done properly, you could even place the camera so that it rests on the lens shade, protecting the front element.
