Mark, You raise some interesting issues and there is no clear answer but they are worth considering nonetheless. I tend to believe the bokeh issue is on the pseudo-technical side rather than the 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' but to each their own: it seems that this is an aspect of a lens that one can find if looking for it but has little real impact to the average viewer. An analogy might be to the hifi lover vs the music lover which is not always the same thing. I don't have any worries about anyone's enthusiasms but if the issue is photography, as in the production and appreciation of good photographs, bokeh seems pretty ephemeral to me but that is just one bloke's opinion.
