I would love to believe that was true...but it sounds like a costly proposition, as opposed to just marking them 'demo'...

This is a pure guess, but I would imagine that cameras which don't pass
final inspection would be stripped down to their basic parts (gears,
screws, etc.), and all indidual parts which then pass inspection would be
recycled to the parts inventory for assembly into future cameras.  The ones
which don't would be trashed.
