It is under new management, which understands that a business will only survive if it is profitable. Their decisions regarding products will be based on whether the product is selling in sufficient quantities to justify continuing production. Or rather, I should say, whether the product can be sold at a price which will cover the incremental cost of continuing production and yield a profit. This is true for the R6.2, R8 as well as the M6 models. Keep in mind that this incremental cost is not that high at this point: the development cost is a sunk cost at this point, as is the cost of acquiring the tooling etc. So we are talking mainly about materials and labour cost plus of course a share of corporate overhead and a profit margin. The main cost is labour; and Leica has to evaluate whether the people currently engaged in R production can be better used in other parts of the business.
