[Leica] First quarter FY 2000/2001

Interesting observations and confirmations of new prodcuts in the results 
of the first quarter of the fiscal year 2000/2001 (see the Leica 
website). An excerpt:

The Leica M rangefinder system registered growth of 38.8% to DM 22.7 
million.
The development was equally positive with regard to both cameras and 
lenses.
Product innovations introduced at the photokina photographic trade fair, 
which
were directed in particular at fans of wide-angle photography with the 
Leica M6,
are to make a contribution to the continuation of the growth.
A stabilisation of sales was achieved in respect of the Leica R SLR range.
The sales of DM 9.1 million were only 2.4% lower than in the prior year. 
After a
long time the camera bodies again registered growth.
With sales of DM 11.1 million the Leica compact cameras achieved almost 
the
same share in total sales as in the full fiscal year 1999/2000. In 
comparison with
the first quarter of the prior year the growth amounted, however, to 
75.6% due
to a strong basis effect. The introduction of new products only occurred 
during
the second half year and thus still had its effect at the beginning of 
the fiscal
year 2000/2001. The presentation of various innovations is planned during 
the
current second quarter and will also include for the first time a camera 
with the
new APS film system.
