Terry,

Until quite recently, if you wanted a new interchangeable lens rangefinder
camera, there was only the Leica M series.  Now you have a choice with the
Konica Hexar RF and the Cosina Bessa R cameras.  If you wanted a new high
quality SLR camera, you had a large number of choices.

So naturally, the Leica fans are largely owners and users of the rangefinder
series of Leicas.  There are many users of the R series on this list, but
they are outnumbered by the M users (because the M is more unique than the R
series, as I mentioned above).

The real question (or choice) is not so much between an M Leica and an R
Leica, but between and R Leica and a Canon, Nikon, Minolta, or Contax SLR.
A Leica R camera is "right" for you if you prefer it over the other brands
of SLR cameras.
