The ROM contact thingys tell your flash where to zoom to. The chip also stores information about the actual aperture of the lens, rather than the nominal aperture, which is printed on the outside of the lens and on the box. This actual aperture is taken into account by the R8 in the automatic modes, to give us lucky R8 owners betterly exposed shots (according to the cameras idea of well exposed, which is pretty well on the ball, so far as I've experienced.). With the modular lenses, the particular aperture characteristics of the lens head are passed to the focussing module, which then passes the ROM parameter for both lens units on to the camera, which then makes sense of it all and takes a beautiful picture. Or so it goes. Having hopefully contributed to this debate, I will now slide back into the deep lurk you all know me for. Regards Rick (got all that from Leica Fotographie a while back) Dykstra
