In the end this turned out no to be intrinsic to scanning per se but to be because I was using a scanner with a low Dmax (the Scan Dual, Dmax=3.0). A scanner with a higher Dmax like the LS2000 (3.6 nominally) or the Sprintscan 4000 (3.4 nominally, though I think it could be more) should handle a thicker neg with no problem. However, I did discover the lovely tonality and sharpness of a thin neg in the process! The flip side of this is that scanners with low Dmax will make a mess of low-key transparencies, as I also found to my cost. - -- Johnny Deadman
