It's not the money, it's the principle. Actually, it *is* the money ;) $2,500 invested wisely (and with a spot of good fortune) can result in a fairly substantial capital gain over even a few months. In addition, there is the issue of a reduction in spending freedom: the fact that the LHSA has your check for some amount of time before they part with the goods means that you cannot use that money (or any portion of it) for any other purpose. When the situation is reversed and a bank is at the other end of the deal, you have the pleasure of paying interest on the amount for exactly those reasons.
