From your description of the problem I think you have a light leak  from
deteriorated foam at the film window of your back .  This is common with
many cameras of the age of the R-4.  You could have it replaced, or simply
cover the opening with opaque photo tape( the infamous black tape).  This is
what I have done to three of them.  I know this design is a carry-over from
Minolta, but as many things as Leica gives it's owners credit for being able
to do for themselves you would think that remembering what film you loaded
would be one of them.
