Simon, I find the 35-50-90 combination covers just about any situation with my "monsters". The 35 Summicron (R, in my case) is ideal for their classrooms, which generally have enough light for 1/30 or 1/60 sec @ f/2 with Tri-X. As they've gotten older, lenses over 90mm have become more useful but the 90 (Summicron-R) is still my favorite for kid pix.
