Would adding a diopter adjuster on an M
camera have compromised its structural strength and integrity of the body
shell that much?

- ---No, it just would have put it in the same league with the Contax G2,
Olympus OM3 & OM4, Nikon f5, F100 and, I believe  N90, etc. etc. etc. etc.
etc...oh, yes, and Leica R6.2 and R8...But it would also have meant the loss
of a lot of $70-90 diopter sales! :-)
