There is another legend, that North Carolina- being a big producer of what are called Naval Stores- Pitch, pine tar and turpentine- durint the 18th century, that the troops had poured tar on bridges to impede the British troops. The were called Tarheels for tarring the heels or the troops, similar to the way that sailors were called 'Tars' for tarring their hair (the peculiar jumper colloars of sailors' uniforms recall those days since they acted to protect the sailors' jackets!)
