Interesting.  I have a friend, Mike Fletcher, who is good friends with
Mydans.  I'll ask him to query Mydans about this. 

As you note, military photographers used cut and roll film gear.  There
were three to four times as many military photographers in Korea as
civilian pros.  The people I have interviewed were all former military
photographers there and in Japan.
