Just a little bit of info to add on the production cost issue.  It seems that 
Leica is also amortizing the cost of their new aspherical production 
machinery/techniques by providing aspherical elements to others.  Two years 
ago while on a factory tour at Schneider in Kreuznach, I was told by a 
Schneider official that some of the aspherical elements for their new model 
view camera lenses were being provided by Leica.  Seems that Leica now had 
the capacity to produce more than their own internal needs warranted.
