Appreciation of art, whether it be the technique, the viewpoint or the historical context, is work. Notice, I said appreciation not like or love. There are many artists whose work I don't particularly like but I can appreciate the viewpoint and struggle. Many people think all art should appeal to everyone, quickly and w/o effort. Sort of like appealing to the lowest common denominator..."if It doesn't match my sofa, I don't like it!" What a bland world we'd have if this were true. Should all works of literature be written at a third grade level and avoid any references to sex, death and other unpleasant topics to make them "accessible" and inoffensive to everyone that reads them? If this had been the philosophy in photography 100+ years ago, we'd still be looking a t landscapes and portraits exclusively. Not that they are bad! Please note everyone, I'm not including any of you in the above descriptions. Mark Rutledge marlrut@ticnet.com
