When the Nikon screen comes up, click on the blue button that says "Preferences". On the next screen click on "Color Management" Then at the top of the next screen turn off the button that says "Use Nikon Color Management" Close the Nikon program and re-open it. Now one of the choices for scanning should be "grayscale." For some reason, they expect you to discover all of this for yourself! Be sure you turn off the digital ICE feature. It won't work with black and white. The SilverFast lets you make more adjustments before the scan rather than later in Photoshop. At first I didn't think it was worth $500 but I'm gradually learning to use it and can tell a difference. You can't do batch scans with SilverFast without buying another $200 software add-on, though.
