Mark,

I think your thin negatives could be from not having enough developer.  Kodak 
reccommends something like 125ml of STOCK developer per roll.  I use Xtol 1:3 
for a bit of a push (see Anchell's Film Developing Cookbook) and do 2 rolls 
per liter of solution-works well.
