In fact, given that wrinkles in a face contain shadows, and diffusion under the enlarger lens diffuses and spreads shadows (as opposed to highlights when diffusion is on the taking lens), I would expect the end result to be the opposite of what was aimed for. Besides, the issue wasn't to get a "soft" picture, but to reduce the appearance of wrinkles through the use of lighting. I for one don't much like the "soft" look, certainly not from soft filters, and I suspect that others don't too. Photo Techniques has run a series of articles over the summer and autumn of the quality of light and how it influences the end result. I should go back and read them again.
