Assuming the student is not rich or has a scholarship to purchase equipment. Then neither current Nikon or Canon technology can be recommended. A better choice would be to purchase a used Nikon F4 or below or a Canon F1N or below. Used telephoto lenses such as the 180/2.8 or 300/4.0 or even a well used 300/2.8 are readily available at a reasonable price. Even some AF for Nikon if they should be so inclined. If the giants of sports photography such John Zimmerman, Mark Kauffman, and Neil Leifer of Sports Illustrated fame used manual focus lenses, why can't the new kids do the same.
