You are right, you'll lose the image for a split second, and yes that can be a problem for some. But with an SLR you are looking through the lens and see the image you are actually recording instead of relying on frame lines. This makes for a much more accurate viewing of the image or WYSIWYG as I said earlier, minus mirro flip of course. Bear in mind that there is also an EOS-1N RS which has a pellicle (transparent) mirror that does not flip. So you can have an SLR that allows you to see the image 100% of the time like a rangefinder plus you'll actually see the image AT the magnification. Sometimes technology can give you the best of all worlds.
