I'll try and make this short. I'm one of the original members of the Silicon Valley "Home Brew Computer Club", which was active in the 70's. Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs were members as well. Steve was well liked and worked for HP. No one liked Jobs. He wasn't a computer person and this was a "home-brew" computer group. We had meetings once a month and each of us did a "show and tell", each meeting, of what we had been "brewing-up" over the past month. In 1976, Steve shows us all his new single board computer, explains how it works, and then said "we've decided to call it an Apple!" The group (about 45 of us) really had a good laugh. We asked Steve "why on earth an Apple?" and Steve answered, with a big grin, "because we wanted a name that would be different and stand out. None of this Rex, Altair, Scion, Imsai, and other boring and forgettable names. We want to be recognized." And they were. And still are, somewhat. Sort of like "Kodak". A catchy name with no hidden meaning. Jim
