I've been using the STA collar, designed for the APO100 on the 80-200/4.
Besides giving you a better balance, it also makes it easier to rotate the
camera from horizontal to vertical, using the same perspective. I've
attached a custom-made quickmount plate to the bottom of the STA to speed
things up for all my Arca-type ball heads.  The 2XAPO extender though
decreases image quality more than is acceptable for me.
