for the record, i use ilford multigrade iv fb paper with ilford filters. if
my test print, made with a no. 2 filter, is too contrasty at, say, 20
seconds, can i calculate mentally how long an exposure i will have to give
the same image printed with a no. 1 or 1/2 filter, or will this be a purely
empirical operation?>>>>

Guy,

According to Ilford instructions (french edition) filters from 00 to 3 1/2
have the same density such the same time can be set. Density of filters 4, 4
1/2 and 5 are twice the previous so exposure must be doubled. Of course
modification of contrast can bring you to slighty adapt the exposure.

Hope it helps
