Even if they don't know why you are taking pictures. Maybe you look like a professional with a legitimate purpose, and that "proves" that you aren't a pervert. I've heard that wearing a multipocketed vest or an extra lens case can open many doors, although I haven't tried this myself. If I were braver, I might try it out. I do notice that people sometimes move out of the way more readily for a fancy camera. Sometimes while setting up a shot I realize that several people on either side are waiting for me to finish so they can walk in front of me, so I have to put the camera down to make it clear that they can move. I actually am quite prepared to just wait until there is no one in the frame--after all, I don't own the sidewalk and nobody needs to stop just for me--but it would take time to explain that to them, so I generally don't bother. -- Anthony
