I thought the retrofocus design was necessitated in order to allow the SLR's 
mirror to clear the rear element and permit reflex viewing.  The 1st version 
of the 21 S/A R lens (for the original Leicaflex) required the mirror to be 
locked up and the M-type viewfinder used in the accessory shoe.
