Dan, Dan, Dan,

It's pretty unreasonable to expect that you can place a used camera into
a closet and expect it to be good as new years later, especially if
"warm and humid" describes your local climate; at the very least, the
camera's exterior surfaces should've been cleaned carefully, and the
camera placed in a cool dry (40% RH or so ought to do it), dust-free
container. Even Hasselblads rot if you store them improperly. I owned
one which had blistered chrome and greenish corrosion on it's surfaces.
What a mess! Probably could've been avoided had the prior owner simply
gone over it with a damp toothbrush now and then. In fact, I do own
another 500c about the same age--it's almost pristine.

Maybe buy a new top cover (else get out the grinding tools and Bondo)
for your camera and vow not to make the same mistake again!
