His quest was to translate the majesty of nature into a 2 dimensional format. If reality is the goal, color slides for a science class will suffice. The higher goal is to communicate the emotional as well as the actual. It is the difference between art and documentation, and I think it applies to all variations of photography. I find Rowell's work to be glamorous documentation.
