Alan,
I believe you. I meant to imply that if a smart dog bites his owner, then
the OWNER must be doing something wrong. I think your pack analogy is
absolutely correct. As long as a dog feels that he's a valuable
member of the pack, I've never known one to be a problem.
The danger seems to occur when the OWNER (pack leader) doesn't understand
that the dog just wants to know what his job is in the pack and then be
given a chance to do it.

Some wolves seem to feel the pack hierarchy even more strongly. Whenever the
owner is ill, or doesn't meet the wolf's expectations as a leader, the wolf
figures he's obligated step up and take charge.

I guess we're lucky that our other companions (Leicas) don't suffer from the
same needs. Then again, I think I've detected a certain aloofness in my M3
whenever I goof up...

Maybe that's why some people trade in their trusty old lenses.
It's not that they don't like the lenses any more, its just that the
equipment has become exasperated and given up on them.
