Simon, I think that the M5 top-plate is brass. The bright color that shows in 
the wear marks is most likely the nickel plating that is applied over the 
brass as a "filler' and also as a sealer. I have taken a couple of M5's apart 
and they had brass tops.

Tom,

My black M5 shows what appears to be zinc rather than brass where it is
worn. Did Leica start using zinc with the M5?
