Mike,

I used to have one of these Canonet QL-17s  when I did news photography.
They were great for beat around cameras and, as you said, you could fill
flash up to 1/500 sec. We used to use them especially when photographing
high school basketball in poorly lit gyms. Direct flash, f8.0, focus at
10 feet and head back to meet deadline. I miss mine.
