I'm about the same as you guys, use a Gitzo 1563L "Reporter Long", goes to 
80", which lets me place the foot of the pod a few feet in front of me, angle 
it back toward me and lean into it, making me part of a tripod situation.  
Also helpful when I'm facing down a hill.
