Subject: RE: [Leica] ALPS 5000 Printer -anyone tried it?

See the July 1999 Macworld magazine page 51. They rate it at 4 mice.
Here is the summary:
Pros: Versatile, durable output; good photo quality with dye sub option.
Cons: Expensive

Their buying advice is basically that if you just want photo quality
output you are better off with the good ink jets for a lot less money.
If you want the options of the speciality ribbons go for the Alps.

Also if you want to use it on a mac you need a SCSI connection kit, appx
$98.00..if using iMac or B&W G3 then you have to have installed a SCSI
card or USB/SCSI adapter.

The article says the outputs are not truely photorealistic, they print
with the kind of visiable line screen one would see in a magazine half
tone. Says the outputs lack the photographic quality of the newer six
color inkjets such as the Epson Stylus Photo series.

They may have the article on their site. www.macworld.com
