Mercury batteries have a remarkably flat discharge curve: they "keep on
keepin' on" until they die. Other battery compounds discharge more
gradually, so that there is a slow tapering off of the power output.

Electronic gear which includes an electronic circuit (called a "voltage
regulator" or "compensated circuit") to accomodate a gradual
power-discharge curve will allow the use of silver-oxide or alkaline cells.
The Japanese tended to design their gear just to use the flat discharge
curve of the mercury cells and not to include such compensated circuitry.

I haven't a clue as to whether the SL includes such, but would suspect it
does, as most German and Russian gear seems to have compensated circuits.
