I do remove when shooting in a situation where the filter is creating a large amount of flare (easy to see with an SLR). Often when working on an assignment where things are happening fast and furious I rarely put any caps on my lenses...just drop them into the bag front element down knowing there is a filter on the front to absorb the impact should they hit anything...the unprotected rear element is left poking up. Over 12 years of work as a news/editorial/commercial location photographer I have never had a lens where the elements looked anything less than like new. As other have said do what you prefer as each person uses his/her gear in a different way and must work in the manner that best suits them.
