Here's why: The different magnification of the goggles reduces the base of the rangefinder, but not the angle. Thus with goggles * |\ | \ | \ | \ +----+ small base and without goggles * |\ | \ | \ | \ | \ | \ +------+ bigger base As you can see, at the same angle of the RF beam hits the VF beam at a larger distance when the base is increased. Thus, if you remove the goggles, you have to focus, read the distance from the dial on the lens, multiply by 35/50 and reset the distance. Personally, I find it a bit difficult to focus on my .72x finder because of the small RF patch, but I'm wearing glasses so getting an overview is easier for me with the goggles. Since focusing is not so important because of DOF I prefer the goggles. Cheers, Peter.
