I had closer look at the printers, and what do you know-the six-color "Photo" series printers *do* look like they work better at shading. Not what I would've expected, since CYMK is the usual standard. Of course, direct comparisons are tough in the store, because the sample prints are all different, and the older Photo printers were about out of black ink, so you can imagine how the results looked. But a close look at the factory-provided samples for the 900 and all non-photo printers is interesting in that they've avoided any subtle tonal gradations in most prints, so the effects of dithering are very hard to determine, though the dot patterns of the 900 really seem to be small. I think the Photo EX, which costs a bit less than $400, and handles larger 11 x 44" paper, may be the printer for me, but it was out of stock last night, and sooner or later, the 900's improvements have to make their way to the Photo lineup.
