I can't tell you how long a drive it is from Sugarloaf - but the Blue Hill,
Stonington, Deer Isle, Castine area is one of the most spectacular on the
whole coast...It IS Downeast....not to be missed...I've only been there in
the summer...and a million years ago spent a summer as the
photographer/reporter for The Weekly Packet, in Blue Hill...but my guess is
it would also be gorgeous this time  of year...if more than a bit chilly...

The coast of Maine is spectacular at any time of year. My favourite town is
Camden where I (ahem!) happen to own an inn. Its about 2 hours from
Sugarloaf.
