On the other hand, using vuesmart, negative scanning is really terrific - esp. for the price of the scanner. But price aside, with Vusmart I'm discovered that I can scan an XP2 Super neg, crop it, and blow up the crop to over 8x10 and still get a really good print off the Epson Stylus 700. The bottom line may be that if you are primarilly a negative shooter - b&w or color - the HP is a satisfactory machine. But if you're going to be doing primarilly slide, or a fair number of slides, you need to go for a better machine.... B. Jörg, I too have concluded that the Photosmart is much better at scanning negatives than slides. However, I have gotten some very acceptable slide scans from it (a couple of which are on my web page). Depending on the severity of the problem, you may consider getting the scanner serviced or exchanged (depending on your current warranty situation). When I bought mine a little over a year ago, there was a lot of discussion of HP's quality problems with this scanner on the Compuserve Photo Forum, with some people reporting having to exchange the scanner up to 3 times before they had a correctly functioning unit.
