Here in England they sell "lens cap keepers" which are two small black
circular sticky pads with a short piece of cord between them.   You attach
one of the sticky pads to the cap and the other to somewhere on the camera
(e.g. the lens hood) and away you go, with the cord keeping the cap safe.
Do you not have these in the US?   Sounds the ideal solution to me.
